Airlines drop fares to attract Indian flyers

NEW DELHI: Firm up your travel plans quickly as both India and foreign carriers have a sale on to lure passengers with lower fares. While Indian carriers are offering domestic and international fares staring at Rs 899 and Rs 3,399, respectively, foreign airlines have also reduced fares for travel from India for some time. The airlines do it with the twin objective of filling up seats in lean travel periods this year as also to generate cash through advance sales.

Qatar Airways, for instance, is offering upto 35% and 25% discount on economy and business fares on all its flights booked upto January 16 for travel up to December 31, 2019. Qatar Airways chief commercial officer Ehab Amin said: “We are delighted to invite all our passengers to start planning their next trip with this exciting global promotion offering extensive discounts across all cabin classes on all flights… With this new promotion, passengers… are truly spoilt for choice with Qatar Airways’ ever-expanding global network of more than 160 destinations.”

British Airways’ has started its “January sale” for over 100 destinations across its economy, premium economy and business cabins. Return fares to London start from Rs 43,779 and the sale runs until January 31. The travel period varies by destination and cabin. BA’s acting Head of sales Asia Pacific and Middle East Moran Birger said: “We have offers to suit a range of budgets and requirements with prices starting from INR 43,779 and more than 100 destinations on offer across our network. Customers should log on to ba.com to take advantage of this exciting offer.”

Under Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways’ global sale, the airline if offering discounts for people flying from India to Abu Dhabi, US, Europe, Canada, Australia and Africa. “For the travel period of January 29 to March 29, 2019, with trips completed by May 2, 2019, guests are eligible for a discount of up to 35% on economy class tickets and up to 20% on business class tickets. For the travel period post March 30, 2019, guests can avail a 10% discount economy tickets and a discount of up to 20% on business tickets,” Etihad said in a statement. Etihad Airways currently offers 154 weekly flights from India, and these fares are applicable on flights from any of Etihad Airways’ 10 Indian gateway cities – Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram.

“Etihad Airways’ guests travelling to the United States are able to pre-clear US Immigration and Customs at Abu Dhabi International Airport before boarding their US-bound flights…. (this) enables international travellers to arrive as domestic passengers in the USA avoiding lengthy immigration and customs formalities,” the airline added.

IndiGo has a special sale across its network upto Sunday (January 13) with all-inclusive fare starting at Rs 899 across domestic and Rs 3,399 across international sectors. This sale is valid for travel between January 24 and April 15, 2019.

IndiGo chief commercial officer William Boulter said: “We are delighted to announce this sale across our network effective till January 13. As always with our sales, we reward the customers who book flights with two weeks notice and help us fill our seats in advance. We are sure that the market will quickly take up the seats we have available, starting at fares as low as Rs 899.”

GoAir also has a sale till Friday with fares starting at Rs 999 for travel from January 25 to September 29, 2019. Cash-strapped Jet Airways also has a sale on.
