Kohli first Asian captain to achieve this feat

NEW DELHI: India on Monday earned a hard-fought 1-0 lead in the four-match Test series after registering a 31-run victory over Australia in the opening Test at the Adelaide Oval. And with this win India captain Virat Kohli also became the first Asian captain to win Tests in Australia, England and South Africa.

Former India captains Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni won Test matches as captains in England and South Africa but not in Australia.

The last Test India won in Australia was at the WACA Ground in Perth in 2008. This also means that Virat has become the first Indian captain after Anil Kumble to win a Test match in Australia. The last time India won a Test match in Adelaide was in 2003 under Sourav Ganguly‘s captaincy. India now have six Test victories in more than 70 years on Australian soil. This is also the first time India has won the opening Test match on an Australian tour. India are the second Asian side to win the opening Test of a series in Australia. Pakistan defeated Australia at the MCG in 1979.

  • Virat Kohli became the first India captain since Anil Kumble in 2008 to win a Test match on Australian soil
  • India suffered a 0-4 defeat in 2011-12 and lost 0-2 to Australia in 2014-15
  • ‘King’ Kohli became the 1st Indian captain to win the opening Test of a series against Australia in Australia

List of Indian Test wins in Australia:

59 runs Melbourne in 1981

31 runs Adelaide in 2018
